Black Myth: Wukong Takes Steam by Storm With Record-Breaking Popularity
Black Myth: Wukong’s Meteoric Rise
Black Myth: Wukong, a newly released game for PC and PlayStation 5, has quickly become a sensation on Steam. Within less than 24 hours, the game reached over 2.2 million concurrent players, positioning it as Steam’s most popular game based on concurrent players. This is an impressive feat considering that popular games like Dota 2 and Counter-Strike 2 have much lower all-time peak concurrent records.
Surpassing All Expectations
On August 20, Black Myth: Wukong surpassed Palworld’s record of 2.1 million concurrent players, although it still falls short of PUBG’s astonishing 3.2 million. What makes Black Myth: Wukong’s popularity even more notable is that it is a paid game costing $60, unlike its free counterparts like Dota 2 and PUBG.
High Sales and Community Congratulations
Currently, Black Myth: Wukong also tops Steam’s chart of best-selling games. A significant portion of its player base comes from China according to reports. Interestingly, Palworld developer Pocketpair has congratulated Game Science, the Chinese developer behind Black Myth: Wukong, for surpassing Palworld’s concurrent player figure.
Controversies and Criticisms
Despite its success, Black Myth: Wukong hasn’t been without controversies. Game Science’s guidelines for content creators advise against discussing certain topics like “feminist propaganda” and COVID. A 2023 report from IGN highlighted alleged sexist and misogynist commentary from the development team.
